‘Sherpa’ is the name of the ethnic group that lives in the Everest region, even

though it is commonly used to describe any Nepali guide or porter. Sherpa boys

are traditionally named for the day of the week they are born on. So Friday is

Pasang, Saturday is Pemba, and so on. So if you stand on a busy street corner in

Namche Bazaar and shout ‘Pasang Sherpa’, one in seven of the local men around

you should turn.

Distance // 85 miles (136km)

Duration // 10-12 days of trekking will get you to Base Camp and acclimatised

enough for a summit climb. One day of snow climbing.

Getting there // Fly to Lukla from Kathmandu in 25 minutes.

When to go // March to April, October to November.

More info // A good trekking agency will arrange flights, climbing permits and

safety gear, as well as supplying a team of sherpas. Book a tour operator in your

home country, or search Trekking Agencies’ Association of Nepal

(www.taan.org.np) for local operators.

Things to know // Basic snow-climbing skills are needed. Guides can teach these

at Base Camp. A weekend of instruction before your trip is the best preparation.
