half-timbered village of Hausach hunkers below a ruined medieval castle. Nearby

is Titisee, a shimmering green-blue lake in the southern Black Forest, now devoid of

its summer crowds. The same is true of the bald hump of Feldberg, further south,

which is the highest peak in these parts at 4898ft (1493m). The mountain itself is

not particularly attractive, but the views are superb – reaching all the way to Mont

Blanc in the furthest reaches of the Alps on clear days.

The landscape softens in one of the hike’s last legs through the Markgräflerland,

whose orchards and vineyards are now turning gold. The smell of new wine hangs

in the air and pumpkins in all shapes and sizes are sold in carts outside

farmhouses. My walk is drawing to a close and I know that I’ll miss this forest. But

for now, Basel awaits. KC
