Although the name is absent from most maps, and its borders are not well defined,

the 1350-sq-mile (3500-sq-km) Tarkine Wilderness Area in northwest Tasmania

contains Australia’s largest tract of cool temperate rainforest. Roughly bounded

between the Pieman and Arthur rivers, ‘Australia’s last great wilderness’ is home to

towering Huon pine trees, sheltering Tasmanian devils, quolls, platypus, echidnas,

wombats, bandicoots and wedge-tailed eagles. If the Tasmania tiger – ‘presumed

extinct’ in 1986 – survives anywhere, it’s most likely here, perhaps within the ultraremote

70-sq-mile (180-sq-km) Savage River National Park. Trails are rough and

tough, but they exist. One option leaves Corinna and combines the Huon Pine Trail

and the Savage River walk to trace the banks of the Pieman River to the mouth of

the Savage River. A link trail then segues to Savage River Bridge and the Mt

Donaldson walk, to make a truly epic adventure in a properly primeval place.
