UK CHALLENGE WALKS

YORKSHIRE THREE PEAKS

There are two walks in the UK that people associate with the term ‘three peaks’.

One involves climbing the highest summits of each mainland nation: Ben Nevis,

Scafell Pike and Snowdon, but it requires almost as much time on the motorway as

it does on the peaks. The Yorkshire Three Peaks is a much more wholesome affair:

a 23-mile (37km) walk over 2415ft (736m) Whernside, 2372ft (723m) Ingleborough

and 2277ft (694m) Pen-y-ghent that allows you to really savour these beautiful and

distinctive mountains. The route traditionally starts at Horton-in-Ribblesdale where

people can literally clock in at the Pen-y-ghent cafe. The walk is a great way of

exploring the Yorkshire Dales, but pedants like to point out that the actual summit

of Whernside lies in the neighbouring county of Cumbria. Those who complete the

route in under 12 hours are invited to join the ‘Three Peaks of Yorkshire’ club.

Start/End // Horton-in-Ribblesdale

Distance // 23-26 miles (37.5-42km)

CAIRNGORMS 4000ERS

There are nine mountains higher than 4000ft (1219m) in Scotland and the

Cairngorms National Park is home to five of them, two on one side of the Lairig

Ghru pass and three on the other. Buses run to the ski centre from nearby Aviemore

and from there it’s a relatively easy climb up on to the wild arctic plateau that holds

the summits of 4085ft (1245m) Cairn Gorm and 4295ft (1309m) Ben MacDui.

Dropping down into the Lairig Ghru you then need to climb to the summit of Cairn

Toul (4235ft/1291m) for a very different mountain experience that leads you to the

4127ft (1258m) Angel’s Peak and the mighty Braeriach (4252ft/1296m). You can

split the route into a two-day trip with a free overnight stay in the Corrour Bothy or

the far less ‘salubrious’ Garbh Choire Refuge. Feeling really athletic? Then cycle

the 65 miles (105km) to Fort William to walk Scotland’s remaining four 4000ft

(1219ft)peaks, including 4413ft (1345m) Ben Nevis.

Start/End // Cairngorm ski centre car park

Distance // 21 miles (34km)
