The Devil may have all the best tunes, but in the UK he also seems to have a

monopoly on exquisite geology. You can climb the Devil’s Kitchen in

Snowdonia, Wales, stand on the Devil’s Point in Scotland’s Cairngorms,

descend into the 100ft (30m) gorge of the Devil’s Pulpit in the same country’s

Finnich Glen, and even clamber up the Devil’s nostrils in the Shetland Islands. And

just a short distance from Fort William, you can cross the Devil’s Ridge, a highlight

of The Ring of Steall and one of the best mountain day hikes in the country.

This 10-mile (16km) walk across muscular mountain terrain attracts a tiny fraction

of the footfall of neighbouring Ben Nevis; while Scotland’s highest peak draws an

estimated 150,000 people to its 4413ft (1345m) summit each year, we met just one

solitary walker during our long day on this incredible route. He had driven overnight

from London to climb four of the mountains that make up the Ring of Steall, each of

them a Munro: a Scottish mountain over 3000ft (914m). There are 282 of these

summits dotted around the country and climbing them all is a challenge that takes
