“From looking down at a concrete jungle, now it’s all mountains, clouds

and sea”

At Stage 5 we emerge from the woods and follow the vehicular road into Wong

Nai Chung Reservoir Park, where we stop for a break. We buy cup noodles and

bottles of Pocari Sweat, a popular Japanese grapefruit-flavoured sports drink, and

eat while watching couples splash around the lake on rental paddleboats.

Fortified, we climb the path to Jardine’s Lookout, where British colonists used to

watch for clippers coming in with the mail from London. There are no clippers

today, but the 1400ft (420m) summit gives sweeping views from the skyscrapers of

Causeway Bay all the way to the mountains of the New Territories. The sun is high

overhead now, and we’re getting sweaty, descending and ascending a series of

narrow dirt paths and stone staircases.
