COASTAL WALKS

OTTER TRAIL, SOUTH AFRICA

South Africa’s most famous long-distance hiking trail is a challenging five-day

coastal route through the Tsitsikamma section of the Garden Route National Park.

Walking up to 9 miles (14km) per day between the frugal huts, hikers cross

beaches, ford rivers and climb to the clifftops, with the reward of experiencing

Tsitsikamma’s pristine coastline, old-growth forests and sightings of whales and

dolphins. This is a one-way trail, walked in a westerly direction only, which means

that you really get a sense of crossing the finish line when you reach the quaint

hamlet and lagoon-backed beach at Nature’s Valley. Indeed, it has become a

ritual for hikers to hang their smelly boots and champagne empties from the tree in

the Nature’s Valley Trading Store beer garden.

Start // Storm’s River Mouth Rest Camp

End // Nature’s Valley

Distance // 28 miles (45km)

More info // Book with South African National Parks (www.sanparks.org) at least six months ahead.
