EIGER NORTH FACE
It’s debatable which climb of the Eiger’s North Face is more famous – the first
ascent in 1938, or Clint Eastwood’s in the 1975 film The Eiger Sanction – but we’re
going with the former. Before that successful climb, most attempts to scale the
North Face had ended in death, but finally four members of a German-Austrian
team (two independent teams who joined up on the mountain) completed the
puzzle of the mighty wall, surviving an avalanche to reach the summit on 24 July
1938.
The fact that this wall of rock is one of the touchstones of mountaineering is
