LEGACY OF ST BERNARD

St Bernard de Menthon (c 1020–1081) was a medieval priest who built a stone

shelter for travellers in the Alps. In time, this shelter grew into a small community,

with no members more famous than the giant St Bernard dogs, whose thick fur,

large paws, strong limbs and sensitive smell made them ideal for rescue missions.

St Bernards were used to uncover lost souls in the snow until the 1950s, when

helicopters replaced the doe-eyed woofers.
