Design of Wood Members for Formwork 149

Horizontal reaction at bottom of brace = H

= 1,406 lb

The axial compression load in the brace is 2,343 lb and the

unbraced length is 10 ft. Table 5-5 shows that many wood members

are adequate to resist this load. Each brace must be securely

attached at the top and bottom.

Design of Forms for a Concrete Slab

The procedure for designing a floor slab is similar to the procedure for

designing wall forms. For a slab, joists perform the same function as

the studs for a wall—they support the plywood sheathing. The stringers

for a slab form support the joists, just as the wales support the

studs in a wall form. The shores support the stringers for a slab form,

whereas the form ties provide support for the wales in a wall form.

The use of the equations and principles developed previously will

be illustrated by designing the forms for a concrete slab (Figure 5-18).
