Forms for Concrete Beams

Figure 11-7 illustrates several methods of constructing forms for concrete

beams. As shown in Figure 11-7(a), the beam bottom, or soffit,

may be made from one or more dressed planks 2 in. thick and having

the required width. If more than one plank is used, they should be

cleated together on the underside at intervals of about 3 ft. The side

forms are made of plywood panels or boards, held together with 2 × 4

cleats. The ledgers attached to the vertical blocking carry the joist

load to the shore. The kickers at the bottom of the side form resist the

lateral pressure from the concrete.

The beam bottom may also be plywood, backed by dimension

lumber laid in the flat position, as illustrated in Figure 11-7(b). Plywood

panels are placed on the top of the runners to provide a continuous
