Detailing Forms

Specifications for architectural concrete frequently require the contractor

to submit, for approval by the architect or engineer, large-scale

drawings showing in detail the formwork that he or she plans to use in

casting the various members or units. Regardless of such requirements,

fully dimensioned plans showing elevations, sections, and other information

are desirable for use by the carpenters or mill workers who

make and assemble the component parts of the formwork. These plans

should show the exact dimensions and locations of all features that are

to appear in or on the concrete. Figure 14-4 illustrates a set of detail

plans for the formwork for the frieze around a concrete building.

Figure 14-5 illustrates a form detail showing a horizontal section

through the wall of a portion of a concrete building, extending from

the entrance at the left of Figure 14-5(a) to the corner at the right side

of Figure 14-5(b). Exact sizes, shapes, and locations of all details must

be shown on the final drawings.

Order of Erecting Forms for a Building

The order of erecting the forms for a building should be scheduled

before materials are ordered and the formwork is fabricated. The

materials that will be erected first should be ordered and fabricated

first. The schedule selected will depend largely on the type of

building to be constructed. There are three general plans for erecting

formwork for structures using architectural concrete.

Plan 1: For one- and two-story buildings and the lower stories of

tall buildings, which are usually more highly ornamented than the

stories above, the following procedure may be used:

1. Erect the outside wall forms and bring them to alignment.

2. Erect the inside wall forms and the floor forms.

3. Bring all forms to the proper alignment, tighten the braces,

and secure all form parts.
