What is <strong>the</strong> meaning <strong>of</strong> this absurd, incompatible representa-<br />

<strong>the</strong> old order <strong>the</strong> pot <strong>of</strong> seeds or <strong>the</strong> liknon full <strong>of</strong> fruits were in<br />

<strong>the</strong>mselves sanctities; <strong>the</strong>y were <strong>the</strong>mselves carried and conse-<br />

crated as dirapxal or first-fruits; <strong>the</strong>y were tabooed from man's<br />

use that <strong>the</strong>y might be <strong>the</strong> seed and source <strong>of</strong> fertility for <strong>the</strong><br />

coming year. There are as yet no human gods, <strong>the</strong>re is no gift-<br />

sacrifice. There are only vague shapes <strong>of</strong> daimones that crystallize
