A momentary track contact
! is turned on when a train reaches a certain point on the layout regardless of the direction of travel of the passing train. In this way a momentary track contact represents one single sensing point on the model railroad. An occupancy sensor is turned on when a train reaches either end of the sensed track section depending on the current direction of travel of the passing train. In this way an occupancy sensor represents two different sensing points on the model railroad. It depends on the direction of travel of a passing train at which of these two points the train triggers the sensor. Even though the software works well with both types of sensors, momentary and occupancy, it is important to ensure, that the indicator symbol, that is associated with a certain sensor, is only turned on once by each passing train, even if the physical sensor is triggered two or more times by the same passing train. Indicator symbols, that are turned on two or more times by the same passing train (“flickering”) may mislead the software and can cause unexpected behaviour of the affected trains. This is especially true for trains running under automatic control of the computer. Use the Memory of each indicator symbol, to prevent indicators from unwanted flickering (see section 12.1, “The Memory of Indicators.”). Each indicator symbol, that is being passed by a train under automatic control of the computer, should be turned on only once by the passing train. 95
