____ A tree or shrub with broadly pyramidal or rounded crown; leaves<br />
medium-large, 6 to 17 cm long, ovate and pointed at leaf tip, light<br />
green, glaucous undersides; flowers white, appearing before or<br />
together with shoot break, 10 cm across; fruits cylindrical, red - a<br />
valuable, hardy magnolia for large areas, parks and streets. S.<br />
Zone 6a.<br />
liliiflora ´Betty´ (liliiflora ´Nigra´ x stellata ´Rosea´)<br />
____ An early-flowering cultivar, with large flowers, up to 20 cm<br />
across; buds purple-red, with 12 to 19 petals, purple-red outside<br />
and white within, appearing end of April to early May - one of<br />
the cultivars that originated from the U.S. National Arboretum<br />
Washington; very free-flowering, especially suitable for small<br />
gardens. S. Zone 6b.<br />
liliiflora ´Nigra´ (= soulangiana ´Nigra´)<br />
____ A less-branched, somewhat loosely growing shrub, about 3 m<br />
tall; leaves 15 cm long, obovate; flowers bell-shaped, up to 12<br />
cm across, dark crimson outside and slightly brighter within, appearing<br />
in May/June, with a regular second flowering season in<br />
summer. S. Zone 7a.<br />
loebneri ´Leonard Messel´<br />
____ Up to 6 to 8 m tall shrub; leaves rather large, obovate; flowers<br />
large, pink outside and white within, at first cup-shaped later flat<br />
spreading, appearing in March/April - a Silver Medallion Award<br />
winner during the Flora Nova, Boskoop, in 1976. S. Zone 6b.<br />
loebneri ´Merrill´ - Dr. Merrill Magnolia<br />
____ A cross between M. kobus and M. stellata; similar to M. stellata,<br />
though growing stronger; the fragrant flowers are somewhat<br />
larger, and petals double as wide; not so sensitive as M. stellata<br />
and flowers after 5 years - a Silver Medallion Award winner during<br />
the Flora Nova, Boskoop, in 1976 - an especially valuable,<br />
early-flowering Magnolia. S. Zone 6b.<br />
