´Red Sentinel´ (= robusta ´Red Sentinel´) - Ornamental Crab
____ A large shrub or small tree, 4 to 5 m tall, with slender crown and
overhanging side branches; leaves up to 7.5 cm long and 3.5
cm wide, middle green with reddish leaf stalks; flower buds light
pink, later white, individual flowers 3 cm wide, white, appearing
middle to late spring; fruits deep red, squat-rounded, having a
diameter of 2 to 2.5 cm, borne in large bunches, clinging to the
plant well into the winter – a lovely, scab-free cultivar, originating
from New Zealand. S. Zone 5a.
´Royalty´
____ A medium-tall tree with glossy, bronze-red leaves; flowers simple,
dark ruby; fruits small and dark red. S. Zone 5a.
´Rudolph´ - Crab Apple ´Rudolph´
____ Alarge shrub or small tree with a wide-spreading crown. New
leaf shoots are brown-red, turning dark green with a brown tinge
in summer. Flowers single, 4.5 cm wide, rosa-red, but carmine
as flower buds. Fruits orange, longish, up to 1.8 m long. A very
dense-flowering tree, less susceptible to apple scab, suitable as
specimen as well as a small-crown wayside tree. S. Zone 5a.
´Street Parade´
____ A medium-tall tree with narrow, egg-shaped crown; flowers 4
to 5 cm in diameter, silvery white, appearing out of velvety pink
buds; fruits bright red, 1.5 cm across - a free-flowering cultivar
with slender-growing habit, suitable for planting on public
grounds and small gardens. S. Zone 5a.
´Tina´
____ Malus sargentii will only be 2 m tall with horizontally spreading
branches; ´Tina´ ,on the other hand, grows distinctly slower and
flowers much more than the species; white flowers appear out
of striking red buds; leaves mainly 3-lobed, turning yellow in autumn
- definitely the best, dwarf cultivar at the moment. S. Zone
5b.
