baccata - Common Yew, English Yew
____ A medium-large, native tree or shrub with a very variable growing
habit; crown either oval or rounded, densely growing or loosely
growing with horizontal branches; bark on old stems flaky, appearing
like bark of London planes; needles in two rows, arranged
radially on upright twigs, dark green above, lighter underneath;
fruits with stone fruit-like seeds and red, fleshy aril - a valuable
conifer that tolerates shade like no other conifer and possessing
a high ability to regenerate new shoots. H, St. Zone 6a.
baccata ´Fastigiata´ (= baccata stricta, baccata var. hibernica) - Irish Yew
____ 3 to 5 m tall, tightly upright-growing when young, multi-branching,
columnar growth, that often falls out of shape when older,
with rather thick, somewhat bent, deep dark green, needles - an
especially lovely cultivar for hedges or for planting as a specimen
or in groups, prefers slightly shady positions. H, K, S, St.
Zone 6a.

baccata ´Fastigiata Aureomarginata´ (= hibernica grandis, baccata fastigiata grandis) - Golden Irish Yew
____ Similar in growing habit as the well-known Irish yew, but differs
through the broad needles with golden yellow edges found on
young shoots, that slowly turn light green through the summer -
often mistakenly available as ´Fastigiata Aurea´, the real ´Fastigiata
Aurea´ is however very seldom and less valuable, as its
needles scorch under the sun. S. Zone 6b.
baccata ´Fastigiata Robusta´ - Irish Yew ´Fastigiata Robusta´
____ Differs from ´Fastigiata´ in its more rigid growth (therefore seldom
falls apart), the coarser, lighter in colour, longer, sturdier
needles and especially also due to the higher tolerance to winter
conditions and the lesser sensitivity towards sun in winter - a
much more valuable cultivar than ´Fastigiata´. H, K, S, St. Zone
6a.
