sieboldii (= parviflora) - Oyama Magnolia
____ A deciduous shrub, hardly over 4 m tall in Germany; leaves
broadly elliptic, 10 to 15 cm long, dark green above and bluish-green
underneath; flowers cup-shaped, 7 to 10 cm across,
appearing in June/July, pleasantly fragrant -a striking, summerflowering
species. S. Zone 6b.
soulangeana
____ A large shrub, 5 to 6 m tall and equally wide, with a rounded later
loosely growing habit; leaves rather wide, up to 15 cm long, light
green; flowers erect, bell-shaped, up to 10 cm long, white within
and reddish outside shortly before leaf break, appearing in April
- a popular, free-flowering and long-lasting specimen plant. S.
Zone 6b.
stellata (= kobus var. stellata) - Star Magnolia
____ A very slow-growing, much-branched shrub, rarely over 2 m tall
and wide; leaves obovate, up to 10 cm long, with wavy edges;
flowers snow-white, fragrant, fully opened, with 12 to 15 narrow
petals appearing in March/April - a valuable,especially earlyflowering
species. S. Zone 6a.
stellata ´Royal Star´
____ Differs from the species in its faster-growing habit, the higher
number of petals (25 to 30) and the later flowering season
(about 10 days later), whereby damage due to late frost can
often be avoided - a valuable, free-flowering, improved cultivar
to the species. S. Zone 6a.
´Susan´ (= liliiflora ´Nigra´ x stellata ´Rosea´)
____ A compact-growing cultivar with numerous, slender, up to 15 cm
long, purplish-red flowers; very long flowering season (from end
of April to early June) - probably the loveliest of the 8 cultivars
originated from the U.S. National Arboretum Washington; a magnificent
cultivar for small gardens. S. Zone 6a.
