____ A very healthy selection from the USA, reaching about 12 m tall<br />

and 4 m wide, with a narrow, rounded crown; leaves broadly<br />

oval, up to 8 cm long, leathery, very glossy dark green above,<br />

turning splendidly red to glossy scarlet red in autumn; foliage<br />

remains till deep in the winter; insensitive to fire blight and very<br />

tolerant to air pollution - a very good flowering tree with a narrow<br />

crown, that roots well even in heavy soils. S. Zone 5a.<br />

QUERCUS - OAK - FAGACEAE<br />

palustris - Pin Oak<br />

____ 20 to 40 m tall tree with very regular, broadly conical crown;<br />

leaves vivid green, glossy, very similar to Q. coccinea, though<br />

smaller, turning red in autumn - a specimen tree or street tree,<br />

adaptable in industrial areas, for moist, or even dry soils. D, R,<br />

tree, from a street tree to forestry, an indispensable tree as food<br />

robur (= pedunculata) - Pedunculate Oak, Common Oak, English Oak<br />

____ A magnificent tree, 30 to 40 m tall, often a gnarled tree when<br />

older, with broad, irregular crown and darker, deeply cracked<br />

bark; leaves leathery, deep green and glossy above, turning<br />

yellow-bronze in autumn, leaves are longer-lasting on younger<br />

trees - an impressive park and street tree with a long life, for<br />
