serrulata ´Royal Burgundy´ - Royal Burgundy Cherry NEW!<br />

____ Having a broad and funnel-like growing pattern, 5 to 7 m tall;<br />

leaves are deep violet to magenta, turning bronze violet –purple<br />

in autumn, flowers strikingly dark pink and posing a striking contrast<br />

to foliage. An unvaryingly red-leaved cultivar from the USA<br />

with a slightly weaker growth than P. serrulata ´Kanzan´ but with<br />

an increasing popularity. S, St. Zone 6a.<br />

spinosa - Blackthorn, Sloe<br />

____ A densely-branched, loosely growing, up to 4 m tall, thorny<br />

shrub; leaves up to 5 cm long, dull dark green; flowers white, 1.5<br />

cm across, appearing in April/May, free-flowering; fruits up to 1.5<br />

cm long, dark blue, edible - a plant suitable for natural plantings<br />

in extremely dry positions, exposed to wind. Zone 5a.<br />

subhirtella ´Autumnalis Rosea´<br />

____ 4 to 5 m tall, densely and finely-branched shrub or small tree<br />

with a broad crown; flowers semi-double and depending on the<br />

weather appearing either mid-November and/or early April, with<br />

a soft pink middle and reddish calyx - a striking flowering shrub,<br />

suitable as well for small gardens. S. Zone 6b.<br />

subhirtella ´Fukubana´<br />

____ An upright-growing cultivar, with wide, horizontally, slightly overhanging<br />

shoots; flowers semi-double to double, dark pink in the<br />

buds, turning lighter-coloured later, having its flowering season<br />

a week later than P. subhirtella - a very free-flowering and livelycoloured<br />

cultivar, most probably the loveliest of all subhirtella<br />

cultivars. S. Zone 6a.<br />
