____ Up to 10 m tall, very slow-growing tree, with dense, conicalgrowing<br />

habit and whorlly-arranged branches; striking due to<br />

the double needles, 8 to 12 cm long, stiff and leathery, found<br />

on the ends of annual shoots and arranged umbrella-like - unmistakable<br />

conifer with a unique, exotic beauty; one of the 5<br />

holy temple-trees of Japan; sufficiently frost-hardy; for lime-free,<br />

fresh soils in humid or slightly shady positions. S. Zone 7a.<br />

____ A sturdy-growing, giant tree, growing up to 100 m or more in<br />

California (here up to 50 m), with a continuous trunk all the way<br />

to the top and a regular, pyramid-like crown; bark chapped, light<br />

reddish-bronze; branches mainly pointed downwards, with ascending<br />

ends; scale-like leaves are bluish-green and last for up<br />

to 4 years, turning reddish-bronze in winter; a tree that is resilient<br />

to stormy weather and for moist to fresh, well-drained soils<br />

with constant soil moisture, tolerate acidic to alkaline soil conditions<br />

(over pH 7.4), but must be protected from cold winds and<br />

sunny winters (fairly frost-sensitive when young) - a decorative<br />

tree for planting as specimen, in groups or in parks. S. Zone 6b.<br />

distichum - Bald Cypress, Swamp Cypress<br />

____ A deciduous tree, up to 30 m tall, with an attractive, conical<br />

crown which is open in Europe, whereas under native conditions<br />

it forms a panel-like, flat crown; the striking, foliage are almost<br />

feather-like, light green, turning rusty bronze in autumn before<br />

dropping off together with short shoots; strange are the kneelike,<br />

root structures, which grows densely and vertically out of<br />

the ground when grown in wet conditions - an unusual park tree,<br />

that thrives - like no other conifers - not only on wet and swampy<br />
