lusitanica - Portugal laurel<br />

____ A big, evergreen and well branched shrub (in his region of origin<br />

up to 20m high growing tree); branches are red, hairless;<br />

longish-ovate leaves, acuminate and 6-12 cm long, lightly sawn,<br />

upside shiny, dark green underside light green; flowers white, on<br />

12-15 cm long grapes in June; fruits ovate, red, ca. 8 mm long<br />

– a very good cuttable plant for hedges, troughs, single-use or<br />

group-plantings with a good winter hardiness depending on the<br />

location. H, K, R, S, St. Zone 8a.<br />

lusitanica ´Angustifolia´ - Portugal laurel<br />

____ Like lusitanica, but having a compact habit; leaves are shorter<br />

and smaller, 5-7 cm long and 2-3 cm broad – a variety which originates<br />

in France 1877; having a more graceful looking overall<br />

and a better winter-hardiness. H, K, R, S, St. Zone 7a.<br />

mahaleb - Mahaleb Cherry, Perfumed Cherry<br />

____ A large shrub or tree with multiple stems, 5 to 7 (sometimes even<br />

10) m tall, with broadly laden and overhanging habit of growth;<br />

flowers white, 1.5 cm across, fragrant, appearing in April/May in<br />

umbellated racemes; fruits 6 to 10 mm thick when older, black<br />

- a robust large shrub for extremely dry areas, slopes or embankments<br />

etc, fruits as food supply for birds. D, R, S. Zone 5a.<br />

padus (= racemosa) - Bird Cherry, European Bird Cherry<br />

____ About 15 m tall tree with narrow, dense and ovehanging crown;<br />

leaves elliptic, dark green above and bluish-green underneath,<br />

turning yellow in autumn; flowers white, pungently fragrant,<br />

borne in loose, hanging racemes with up to 15 to 20 flowers<br />

each in April/May; fruits round, pea-size and black - a plant tolerant<br />

to shade, suitable for natural plantings or in groups in moist<br />
