____ Found in the Eastern Alps to the Balkan region with shrub-like,
low-lying growing habit, knee-like bending branches, numerous
short shoots and twisted needles - a cultivar found in the wild
that also remains stocky in the flatlands and hardly over 2 m tall;
an ideal pine for hedges and for mass plantings. B, D, H, K, R,
St, Z. Zone 4.
mugo pumilio - Dwarf Mountain Pine
____ A cultivar found in the highlands of the mountains of Central
and Eastern Europe with spreading, low-lying growing habit
and branches that grow to different lengths; hardly over 1 m tall,
though up to 3 m across; needles are very short, staying densely
together and dark green - the best dwarf pine for low hedges
and mass plantings, excellent for alpine areas, heather gardens,
troughs and for planting on graves. B, D, H, K, R, St, Z. Zone 4.

____ A broad-growing shrub with 3 to 4 cm long needles that appear
light green in summer, turning light yellow in winter. D, K, R, St,

nigra nigra (= nigra var. austriaca, austriaca, P. laricio) - Austrian Pine
____ Up to 20 m tall, fast-growing tree, with branches almost to
ground level and a conical crown when young, later growing to a
picturesque, broad and flattened crown; needles are long, rigid,
pointed and very dark green - an undemanding pine, that grows
on all soils and also tolerant to dry heat. D, K, R, S, St. Zone 5b.

parviflora ´Glauca´
____ A very attractive tree in varied shapes and sizes, with its slow
growth hardly reaching 10 m tall; young plants are mostly loosely
branched, having a much broader crown only when older;
needles in clusters of 5, much more rigid than the species, bent
and very twisted, on twig-ends clustered brush-like, undersides
of needles are vivid bluish-white; fruits appear in abundance
even in young plants - an ideal pine for heather gardens and for
small house gardens. K, R, S, St. Zone 6a.
