____ Found in the Eastern Alps to the Balkan region with shrub-like,<br />

low-lying growing habit, knee-like bending branches, numerous<br />

short shoots and twisted needles - a cultivar found in the wild<br />

that also remains stocky in the flatlands and hardly over 2 m tall;<br />

an ideal pine for hedges and for mass plantings. B, D, H, K, R,<br />

St, Z. Zone 4.<br />

mugo pumilio - Dwarf Mountain Pine<br />

____ A cultivar found in the highlands of the mountains of Central<br />

and Eastern Europe with spreading, low-lying growing habit<br />

and branches that grow to different lengths; hardly over 1 m tall,<br />

though up to 3 m across; needles are very short, staying densely<br />

together and dark green - the best dwarf pine for low hedges<br />

and mass plantings, excellent for alpine areas, heather gardens,<br />

troughs and for planting on graves. B, D, H, K, R, St, Z. Zone 4.<br />

____ Up to 20 m tall, fast-growing tree, with branches almost to<br />

ground level and a conical crown when young, later growing to a<br />

picturesque, broad and flattened crown; needles are long, rigid,<br />

pointed and very dark green - an undemanding pine, that grows<br />

parviflora ´Glauca´<br />

____ A very attractive tree in varied shapes and sizes, with its slow<br />

growth hardly reaching 10 m tall; young plants are mostly loosely<br />

branched, having a much broader crown only when older;<br />

needles in clusters of 5, much more rigid than the species, bent<br />

and very twisted, on twig-ends clustered brush-like, undersides<br />

of needles are vivid bluish-white; fruits appear in abundance<br />

even in young plants - an ideal pine for heather gardens and for<br />

small house gardens. K, R, S, St. Zone 6a.<br />
