pendulina (= alpina) - Alpine Rose
____ Up to 1.5 m tall shrub with mainly reddish, otherwise green
shoots, often covered with prickles; leaflets opposite, 7 to 9,
narrowly elliptic, fresh to dark green above, light green underneath,
with yellow autumn colours; flowers mainly single, striking
pink-crimson, in May/June, and richly flowering; fruits orangered,
bottle-shaped, mainly arching and overhanging - suitable
for embankments, stabilising of slopes, or as accompanying
greenery on streets. B. Zone 5a.
pimpinellifolia (= spinosissima) - Burnet Rose, Scotch Briar, Scotch Rose
____ A very variable shrub, hardly over 1 m tall, with many suckers
and slender, very densely thorny or bristly shoots; flowers appear
in May/June, numerous, mainly white, occasionally yellow
or pink; fruits flatly rounded, dark bronze later black - a species
for reinforcements of sanddunes or slopes, can grow well in calcareous
and dry soils. B, D, H, St. Zone 3.
rubiginosa (=eglanteria) - Eglantine, Sweet Briar
____ A fast-growing, 2 to 3 m tall, stocky-growing shrub with short and
very thorny shoots; leaves dark green, with the scent of apples;
flowers 3 cm across, light pink with very bristly stalks; fruits
scarlet red, egg-shaped - a lovely wild shrub for free-growing
hedges. H, R, St. Zone 5a.
rugosa - Japanese Rose
____ 1 to 2 m tall shrub with many suckers; shoots are thick, covered
densely with thorns and bristles; leaves rather rough, wrinkled,
glossy dark green, turning golden yellow in autumn; flowers 6
to 8 cm across, open widely, rosy red to crimson, appearing in
May/June, with continuous flowering till autumn; fruits flat and
round, up to 2.5 cm wide, scarlet red, economically usable,
appearing early - an undemanding shrub, tolerant to wind, for
hedges and natural planting, very important for mass planting.
