____ A large shrub, 4 to 6 m tall, slow-growing, with a broad, bushy<br />
habit; leaves egg-shaped with a magnificent scarlet red autumn<br />
colours; inflorescence inconspicuous, covered from 4 large,<br />
white bracts, appearing in May; fruits equally egg-shaped, scarlet<br />
red - a valuable flowering plant, requires lime-free soils, the<br />
state tree of Virginia. S. Zone 6b.<br />
kousa - Japanese Dogwood<br />
____ An East Asian counterpart to the North American dogwoods;<br />
differs in its later flowering season and the pointed, egg-shaped<br />
bracts with undamaged edges; scarlet red autumn colours; fruits<br />
rosy red and strawberry-like - equally valuable as C. florida. S.<br />

kousa chinensis - Chinese Dogwood<br />
____ A faster growing cultivar than the species; leaves are light green,<br />
hardly wavy, with yellowish veins; bracts up to 6 cm long, wider<br />

soils, a very good plant for hedgerows; flowering sprigs can be<br />

____ A selection with large and freely borne fruits from the `Höhere<br />
Bundeslehr- und Forschungsanstalt für Gartenbau, Wien-<br />
Schönbrunn`; fruits about 24 to 30 mm long and <strong>13</strong> to 20 mm<br />
thick, fruit weight is about 5.6 g (the wild type carries only 2.0<br />
g); worth mentioning is the 14% sugar content and the relatively<br />
high vitamin C content (400 to 550 ppm ascorbic acid) - a lovely,<br />
undemanding ornamental and wild fruit plant for the processing<br />
of fresh fruit juices, syrup, jams, fruit wine, liquor and `Dirndl`schnapps.<br />
