florida - Eastern Flowering Dogwood, White Dogwood
____ A large shrub, 4 to 6 m tall, slow-growing, with a broad, bushy
habit; leaves egg-shaped with a magnificent scarlet red autumn
colours; inflorescence inconspicuous, covered from 4 large,
white bracts, appearing in May; fruits equally egg-shaped, scarlet
red - a valuable flowering plant, requires lime-free soils, the
state tree of Virginia. S. Zone 6b.
kousa - Japanese Dogwood
____ An East Asian counterpart to the North American dogwoods;
differs in its later flowering season and the pointed, egg-shaped
bracts with undamaged edges; scarlet red autumn colours; fruits
rosy red and strawberry-like - equally valuable as C. florida. S.
Zone 6b.
kousa chinensis - Chinese Dogwood
____ A faster growing cultivar than the species; leaves are light green,
hardly wavy, with yellowish veins; bracts up to 6 cm long, wider
and overlapping at the base; fruits equally bigger, rosy red but
yellow beneath. S. Zone 6b.
mas (= mascula) - Cornelian Cherry
____ A large, broad-growing shrub or small tree, up to 6 m tall, valuable
as honey-producing plants; leaves egg-shaped and dark
green; a striking effect due to its numerous, golden yellow flowers
borne in a bundel in early spring (February/April); fruits in
autumn are shiny red and edible, rich in vitamin C - an undemanding
plant for the open fields, adapting to dry and calcareous
soils, a very good plant for hedgerows; flowering sprigs can be
forced to flower early. D, H, R, St. Zone 5a.
mas ´Jolico´ - Cornelian Cherry ´Jolico´
____ A selection with large and freely borne fruits from the `Höhere
Bundeslehr- und Forschungsanstalt für Gartenbau, Wien-
Schönbrunn`; fruits about 24 to 30 mm long and 13 to 20 mm
thick, fruit weight is about 5.6 g (the wild type carries only 2.0
g); worth mentioning is the 14% sugar content and the relatively
high vitamin C content (400 to 550 ppm ascorbic acid) - a lovely,
undemanding ornamental and wild fruit plant for the processing
of fresh fruit juices, syrup, jams, fruit wine, liquor and `Dirndl`schnapps.
