Abstract
The aim of this thesis is to study the perspectives for teaching methods in information literacy at
upper secondary level, through the application of the relational approach. The methodological
approach is to use Christine Bruce’s (1997a) “Seven Faces of Information Literacy” as a theoretical and
analytical tool to assess the educational potential of thereof for teaching practice in information
literacy.
Bruce’s theoretical approach to information literacy was applied in a case study where an 11th form
class from Støvring Gymnasium participated. Students were asked to complete a set of
questionnaires, followed by qualitative interviews and observations of the librarian’s instruction by
the researcher. Participants’ views of information literacy were identified and analyzed with a view
to determining their perspectives in the context of the relational approach to student learning.
The study has shown that the respondents have a broad understanding of the phenomenon of
information literacy. This need is however not met by the teaching provided by the school librarian.
The latter require both a better understanding of the importance of information literacy itself, as
well as improved resources to enable them to better impart information literacy to students as part
of their general learning competence.
The relational approach, therefore, is shown to make a positive contribution to information literacy
teaching on upper secondary level. It enables the combination of a variety of different
understandings of information literacy, including that of students in a given learning situation, that
of enhanced cooperation between teachers and school librarians and particularly in giving rise to
different repertoires of understanding and employment of information.
