GREECE, in <strong>the</strong> eastern Mediterranean, has a tot<strong>al</strong> area of 132,000 km 2 . It is mainly<br />

mountainous and <strong>the</strong>re are sever<strong>al</strong> islands south of <strong>the</strong> continent<strong>al</strong> mainland. Surprisingly,<br />

arable land is 19% of <strong>the</strong> tot<strong>al</strong>. The population in 1999 was 10.6 million and 23% of <strong>the</strong> work<strong>for</strong>ce<br />

was engaged in agriculture, which <strong>for</strong>ms 8% of <strong>the</strong> GDP.<br />

Production constraints<br />

<strong>Rice</strong> yield increased substanti<strong>al</strong>ly during <strong>the</strong> last<br />

five years. There are sever<strong>al</strong> constraints to<br />

sustainable rice production in Greece:<br />

• Low temperature<br />

• Stagnation of <strong>the</strong> yield potenti<strong>al</strong> of rice<br />

vari<strong>et</strong>ies<br />

• High production costs<br />

• Blast<br />

• Dependence on extern<strong>al</strong> mark<strong>et</strong>s <strong>for</strong> <strong>the</strong><br />

product<br />
