NIGER is one of the larger Central African countries, with an area of 1.27 million km 2 . Landlocked, it consists mainly of a plateau; the Sahara Desert occupies the northern parts and there is savanna in the south where crops such as rice are grown. Eighty percent of the population of 10.4 million is rural, engaged in subsistence agriculture, which makes up 40% of the GDP.
