KOREA DPR occupies <strong>the</strong> nor<strong>the</strong>rn part of <strong>the</strong> Korean Peninsula, with an area of 120,000<br />

km 2 , bordering China. Much of <strong>the</strong> country is mountainous, with rice, <strong>the</strong> main agricultur<strong>al</strong><br />

crop, and o<strong>the</strong>r crops being grown on plains. Arable land is less than 20% of <strong>the</strong> tot<strong>al</strong>. Agriculture<br />

makes up 30% of <strong>the</strong> GDP.<br />

Production constraints<br />

During recent years, rice production has declined<br />

because of a substanti<strong>al</strong> decrease in rice yield.<br />

The main constraints to sustainable rice production<br />

in Korea DPR are<br />

• Uneven rainf<strong>al</strong>l distribution during <strong>the</strong> rainy<br />

season—heavy rains during September and<br />

October<br />

• Soils with low fertility<br />

• Lack of production inputs<br />

• Weeds, insects, and diseases, especi<strong>al</strong>ly blast<br />

• Unsuitable system of farm management<br />

(collective cooperative)<br />
