TURKEY, a diverse land of 780,000 km 2 in area, faces the Black Sea and Mediterranean Sea. Its western border marks the traditional separation of Europe and Asia. Turkey is mainly mountainous, with a coastal plain and high central plateau. The proportion of arable land is quite high, 32%, and agriculture occupies 46% of the workforce, making up 18% of the GDP. The population in 1999 was 65.5 million.
