und den Fuller als „Journey along the Rhine“ vorstellt, sowie eine Passage, die sich
Goethes früher philosophischer Auffassung widmet und eine Beschreibung der
Schwester Cornelia. 107 Die Amerikanerin versucht, das intellektuelle Leben in
Deutschland zu Goethes Zeit zu begreifen und herauszuarbeiten, welche deutschen
Dichter den jungen Goethe faszinierten und zur Bildung seines Intellekts beitrugen.
In dem Abschnitt „Early Studies. Early Reading“ erläutert Fuller, dass zum Beispiel
Klopstock früh die Phantasie des Kindes angeregt habe, und erklärt, der Umgang
mit der Poesie fördere die Kreativität eines jeden Kindes. 108 Als Beispiel für die
schöpferische Seite Goethes, die bereits in den frühen Jahren seines Lebens
hervortrat, führt Fuller das Märchen „Der neue Paris“ an, das Goethe in dem
zweiten Buch von Dichtung und Wahrheit vorstellt und das Fuller in „Goethe“
übersetzt. 109 Fuller bezieht sich auf den Aufbau des ersten Teils von Goethes
Autobiographie und plant, in ihrer Biographie eine Übersetzung des Märchens
einzufügen. Sie notiert in ihren Aufzeichnungen: „Insert here, prefaced by remarks
on his Mother’s talent for narration, and his own remarks, the new Paris.“ 110
Margaret Fullers Interesse gilt insbesondere den Einflüssen anderer
Intellektueller, mit denen der junge Goethe in Kontakt kommt: Ein Abschnitt der
Biographie, der sich auf das vierte Buch von Dichtung und Wahrheit bezieht, trägt die
Überschrift „Result of all these varied influences on the mind of Wolfgang at
fourteen“. Fuller übersetzt einen Abschnitt aus Dichtung und Wahrheit, um zu zeigen,
dass Goethe früh gefördert wurde:
My various intercourse with these men was not unimportant in its
results, and each worked upon me in his own way. As I showed as much,
often more attention to each, as his own children, so each sought, as with his
own children, to gratify himself by modelling me in his own likeness. [...]
While these men counselled and instructed me, others nearer my own age
excited my emulation, and, and non so much as the brothers Schlosser
and Griesbach. As I afterwards formed with them an intimacy which
continued through many years, I shall merely observe in this place that
they were at this time held up as patterns in study of the languages and
other pursuits preparatory to the academic course, and that every one
expected that they would become distinguished in the church or in the
state. For myself I also cherished the hope of becoming somewhat
extraordinary, but how, I was not yet clear. 111
