It is used to provide an insert <strong>for</strong> a television show, or a short<br />

scene <strong>for</strong> some purpose.<br />

close shot A short distance picture which includes a small part of<br />

the background and accentuates a detail.<br />

close-up A shot of the actors in which only the head or part of<br />

the head and shoulders is seen. Abbreviation CU. It can be<br />

made at short distances with ordinary lenses, or a long-focus<br />

lens can be used to get the same effect at a distance.<br />

close-up shot The closest possible close-up.<br />

cold light A light that contains relatively little red value. It is<br />

produced by mercury-arc-vapor and fluorescent lamps.<br />

It is<br />

accompanied by the production of much less heat than is<br />

produced by incandescents.<br />

condenser Optical application, a lens which collects the light<br />

from the lamp and focusses it on the film being projected.<br />

Also, the lens in a spotlight which focusses the light on the<br />

subject.<br />

contrast The variation in light value between the darkest and<br />

lightest parts of a picture. Pictures with high<br />

contrast are<br />

very black and white and have poor detail: the intensity of<br />

the blackness or whiteness washes it out.<br />

counter The indicator on the camera which indicates how much<br />

film has been exposed or remains.<br />

crane A long arm mounted on a dolly which makes it possible<br />

<strong>for</strong> the operator to raise or lower the camera and thus obtain<br />

high or low angle shots.<br />

crowfoot A spider-like device on the feet of a tripod to prevent<br />

the legs from opening on very slippery floors.<br />

cue The signal <strong>for</strong> an actor or some part of the program to<br />

commence.<br />

cue sheet-timing The script of the program indicating the times<br />

at which different actions take place and the time allowed<br />

<strong>for</strong> them.<br />

cut A verb meaning to cut off the action, i.e., stop the scene or<br />

go off the air; it also means to switch instantaneously from
