FUNDAMENTALS<br />

The small holes at the sides of film in which the<br />

sprocket teeth engage to pull the film through the equipment.<br />

picture editing The very necessary action of composing the film<br />

to be presented from the conglomeration of scenes which<br />

have been shot. A highly skilled job which pays well. A poor<br />

editor can ruin a producer, and in any case a producer is only<br />

as good as his editor.<br />

picture gate The opening in front of the projector<br />

or camera<br />

lens across which the film passes as it is exposed.<br />

process shot The use of a scene, either still or moving, as a back-<br />

ground <strong>for</strong> action. A translucent screen is used, and the picture<br />

projected from behind.<br />

racking control See out of frame.<br />

RCA sound system A system of sound recording in which a var-<br />

iable area is used to convert light to sound. The sound picked<br />

up by the microphone is caused to operate a mirror galvanometer<br />

which exposes a varying area of film to the record-<br />

ing light. The greater the sound-intensity, the greater the area<br />

exposed. This system has a characteristic appearance<br />

sound track; it looks like a series of very small triangles.<br />

resolution The degree of detail in the reproduction after a pic-<br />

ture has been transmitted through the system. It is related<br />

directly to the amount of in<strong>for</strong>mation the system can transmit.<br />

rim light A light placed in a television film camera to prevent<br />

flare in the picture due to the sudden change in the electron<br />

emission at the edge of the mosaic. It may also refer to a light<br />

used from behind an object to produce depth by making it<br />

stand out from its background by rimming it with light.<br />

roll 'em Slang <strong>for</strong> the order given by<br />

the director when he is<br />

ready to commence filming; it refers to the sound and picture<br />

cameras.<br />

scanning The action of the beam of electrons in the camera or<br />

receiving equipment in sweeping the mosaic or screen from
