modelling light A light used to make a subject stand out from<br />

its background. It is similar to a hot light and directly op-<br />

posite to flat lighting.<br />

montage An effect obtained by the superimposure of three or<br />

more shots. It is very valuable in creating special moods and<br />

suggestion by combining in visual <strong>for</strong>m all the thoughts that<br />

a person might have without being aware of them.<br />

mosaic The sensitive surface in a camera tube, usually made of<br />

mica with a caesium or similar light-sensitive coating. The<br />

is focussed onto it.<br />

picture<br />

moviola A combination sound- and picture-editing device in<br />

which the editor can see and hear the separate picture and<br />

sound tracks.<br />

narration or off screen sound Voice and sound effects produced<br />

by actors or objects<br />

not shown on the screen.<br />

optical view finder A device attached to a camera which enables<br />

the cameraman to see the subject being photographed and<br />

thereby focus and frame it accurately. This is now superseded<br />

by electron view finders <strong>for</strong> television cameras.<br />

out of frame A condition sometimes occurring during the pro-<br />

or the<br />

jection of film in which a sprocket hole is slipped<br />

frame-lines are inaccurate and instead of seeing one com-<br />

plete picture, or frame, the top half of one and the lower half<br />

of the next is seen. The condition can be corrected by moving<br />

the framing control which moves a mask to reset the picture.<br />

panchromatic<br />

film Film which is sensitive to all colors and which<br />

reproduces them all in their true color values in terms of gray.<br />

inning An abbreviation of panorama shot in which the camera<br />

is moved very slowly and smoothly around the field to be<br />

photographed.<br />

panning and tilting head A special tripod head used <strong>for</strong> mount-<br />

ing a camera with provision <strong>for</strong> smooth, horizontal panning<br />

and vertical movements.
