bearded head, <strong>and</strong> on <strong>the</strong> reverse a galloping horseman ; <strong>and</strong><br />

<strong>the</strong>y all apparently belonged to <strong>the</strong> period <strong>of</strong> Sertorius,<br />

B.C. 8078.<br />

Mr. Copp exhibited some unpublished English gold coins,<br />

viz. five guineas, 1676, without <strong>the</strong> elephant <strong>and</strong> castle ; two<br />

guineas, 1677, with <strong>the</strong> large head ;<br />

one guinea, 1694, with <strong>the</strong><br />

elephant <strong>and</strong> castle under <strong>the</strong> busts <strong>of</strong> William <strong>and</strong> Mary.<br />

Canon Pownall exhibited a guinea dated 1692, also a specimen<br />

<strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> new Mexican gold coinage, 1880.<br />

Mr. B. V. Head read a paper " On <strong>the</strong> Constitution <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong><br />

Ephesian Mint before <strong>the</strong> time <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> Empire," in <strong>the</strong> course <strong>of</strong><br />

which he stated that, through <strong>the</strong> kindness <strong>of</strong> M. Waddington,<br />

who had communicated to him all <strong>the</strong> unpublished coins <strong>of</strong><br />

Ephesus in his rich collection, he was now .in a position to<br />

make a very considerable addition to <strong>the</strong> long list <strong>of</strong> Ephesian<br />

magistrates' names already compiled by him in his " History<br />

<strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> Coinage <strong>of</strong> Ephesus." Mr. Head fur<strong>the</strong>r expressed his<br />

opinion that some <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> conclusions which he had in that<br />

work striven to establish could not, in <strong>the</strong> face <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> evidence<br />

now accessible, be accepted without modification. See "Numis-<br />
