MEDALS BY O. M. POMEDELLO. 337<br />

o<strong>the</strong>r medals <strong>of</strong> distinguished persons at <strong>the</strong> same time<br />

<strong>and</strong> place. On page 46 <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> same volume, <strong>and</strong> under<br />

<strong>the</strong> same date, Van Mieris gives ano<strong>the</strong>r larger medal <strong>of</strong><br />

Charles with <strong>the</strong> same legend, having on <strong>the</strong> o<strong>the</strong>r side a<br />

portrait <strong>of</strong> Maximilian. This work may not improbably<br />

have come from <strong>the</strong> h<strong>and</strong> <strong>of</strong> Pomedello, for it resembles to<br />

some extent <strong>the</strong> Canossa medal, which is <strong>the</strong> only signed<br />

example <strong>of</strong> Pomedello's medallion.<br />

reaching <strong>the</strong> dimensions <strong>of</strong> a<br />

It remains to be ascertained whe<strong>the</strong>r this portrait <strong>of</strong><br />

Francis was executed in Italy, or at <strong>the</strong> French Court.<br />

Taking eleven, <strong>the</strong>n, as <strong>the</strong> present limit <strong>of</strong> Pomedello's<br />

au<strong>the</strong>nticated works, we find three bearing both his<br />

signature <strong>and</strong> device, four with his signature without <strong>the</strong><br />

device, <strong>and</strong> four with <strong>the</strong> device only, <strong>the</strong>se last being<br />

two <strong>of</strong> Isabella Sessi, a Venetian lady, one <strong>of</strong> Francis I.,<br />

<strong>and</strong> one <strong>of</strong> Charles V. <strong>The</strong> medalet <strong>of</strong> Pomedello himself,<br />

without ei<strong>the</strong>r, must remain for <strong>the</strong> present in <strong>the</strong> rank <strong>of</strong><br />

attributions.<br />

It should be added that some engravings by Pome-<br />

dello, bearing <strong>the</strong> date 1534, are signed with <strong>the</strong> apple<br />

<strong>and</strong> monogram, without <strong>the</strong> chasing- tools. <strong>The</strong>se en-<br />

gravings, executed later in his life, are said to be far<br />

inferior to his medals.<br />

Fig. 1 in <strong>the</strong> accompanying plate (XIV.)<br />

is <strong>the</strong> medal<br />

<strong>of</strong> Charles V. Figs. 2 <strong>and</strong> 3, also taken from specimens<br />

in <strong>the</strong> writer's collection, represent Pomedello's larger<br />

medal <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> Isabella Sessi above-mentioned, <strong>and</strong> that <strong>of</strong><br />

Frederick II., fifth Marquis <strong>of</strong> Mantua. Of this Isabella<br />

little is known, but it appears from <strong>the</strong> legend<br />

SESSA VENETA that<br />

she was <strong>the</strong> wife <strong>of</strong> one <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> Michieli, a distinguished<br />

family <strong>of</strong> Venice. <strong>The</strong> seated figure, personifying<br />
