niae," <strong>and</strong> on <strong>the</strong> o<strong>the</strong>r side three crowns one above <strong>the</strong><br />

o<strong>the</strong>r, with a cross trefoil, <strong>and</strong> in <strong>the</strong> circumference <strong>the</strong><br />

name <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> place <strong>of</strong> mintage ; 225 groats to make <strong>the</strong><br />

pound Troy in weight, <strong>and</strong> each to pass<br />

pence, a fifth part <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> pound<br />

pieces.<br />

Bullion <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> st<strong>and</strong>ard <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> double <strong>of</strong> 1467 to be<br />

One pound weight <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> new coin was current by tale<br />

for 3 15s., or 6s. 3d. an ounce. <strong>The</strong> merchant in return<br />

for one ounce <strong>of</strong> bullion received from <strong>the</strong> mint 4s. 6d. in<br />

coin, <strong>the</strong> mint master was allowed 2d., <strong>and</strong> <strong>the</strong> King had<br />

a pr<strong>of</strong>it <strong>of</strong> Is. 7d.<br />

<strong>The</strong> Lord Deputy had authority to issue writs to persons<br />

to engrave dies for <strong>the</strong> new coin, <strong>and</strong> all coin made since<br />

<strong>the</strong> 1st <strong>of</strong> January last past <strong>of</strong> due fineness was to be<br />

good in law, <strong>and</strong> all indictments against persons who held<br />

writs from <strong>the</strong> Lord Deputy were to be void <strong>and</strong> <strong>of</strong> no<br />

effect in law.<br />

This is <strong>the</strong> only coin <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> three-crown type which has<br />

<strong>the</strong> place <strong>of</strong> mintage " in <strong>the</strong> circumference " on <strong>the</strong> side<br />

with <strong>the</strong> three crowns, as directed by <strong>the</strong> ordinance for<br />

<strong>the</strong> new coin, but <strong>the</strong> legend on <strong>the</strong> obverse is not in<br />

accordance with <strong>the</strong> specification, as <strong>the</strong> words " Anglise<br />

et Dominus Hibernise " are omitted. It was not possible<br />

to place such a long legend on <strong>the</strong> die, <strong>and</strong> <strong>the</strong> mint<br />

master took advantage <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> discretion which he was<br />

permitted to exercise in making <strong>the</strong> half-groats " with <strong>the</strong>
