<strong>The</strong>se, toge<strong>the</strong>r with some o<strong>the</strong>rs, are <strong>the</strong> l<strong>and</strong>marks<br />

around which I have attempted to arrange <strong>the</strong> coins in<br />

<strong>the</strong> following sixteen historical periods, extending from<br />

about B.C. 600 down to <strong>the</strong> time <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> Empire.<br />

EPOCHS OF BCEOTIAN HlSTORY AND COINAGE.<br />

Period. Circ. B.C.<br />

I. 600-550. Orchomenus <strong>and</strong> <strong>the</strong> Boeotian League.<br />

Coinage <strong>of</strong> Orchomenus modelled upon that<br />

<strong>of</strong> Aegina. <strong>The</strong> earliest Boeotian federal<br />

coinage also consisting <strong>of</strong> Aeginetic<br />

diachms <strong>and</strong> smaller divisions, -issued<br />

at <strong>The</strong>bes, Haliartus, <strong>and</strong> Tanagra.<br />

Its characteristic type, <strong>the</strong> shield <strong>of</strong><br />

Herakles, commonly called <strong>the</strong> Boeotian<br />

shield.<br />

II. 550-480. Apparent advance in commercial ac-<br />

tivity.<br />

First issue <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> didrachm or stater in<br />

Bceotia. Coinage distinguished by<br />

initial letters <strong>of</strong> Acrcephium, Coroneia,<br />

Haliartus, Mycalessus, Pharce, Tana-<br />

gra, <strong>and</strong> <strong>The</strong>bes, which cities, with<br />

Orchomenus, were <strong>the</strong> leading mem-<br />

bers <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> Union before <strong>the</strong> Persian<br />

wars.<br />

III. 480-457. Effect on Bceotia <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> Persian wars<br />

<strong>and</strong> humiliation <strong>of</strong> <strong>The</strong>bes.<br />

First introduction <strong>of</strong> reverse - types.<br />
