Whe<strong>the</strong>r <strong>the</strong>se bronze coins are ckalkoi, <strong>of</strong> which <strong>the</strong><br />

Boeotian obol was worth twelve <strong>and</strong> <strong>the</strong> Attic obol eight, 22 or<br />

it is difficult to decide. If<br />

only three-fourths <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> chalkous,<br />

<strong>the</strong> contemporary Phokian bronze coins, weight 135 grs.,<br />

marked with a T <strong>and</strong> three bulls' heads, are trichalkoi,<br />

<strong>the</strong> chalkous ought to weigh 45 grs. <strong>The</strong> <strong>The</strong>ban coins,<br />

however, <strong>of</strong> this period do not weigh on <strong>the</strong> average more<br />

than 33 grs.<br />

<strong>The</strong> Boeotian coinage from B.C. 378 338 consisted,<br />

<strong>the</strong>refore, <strong>of</strong> didrachms, obols, <strong>and</strong> bronze coins bearing<br />

<strong>the</strong> signature <strong>of</strong> a magistrate, but without <strong>the</strong> name <strong>of</strong><br />

<strong>The</strong>bes.<br />

As <strong>the</strong>re is nothing in <strong>the</strong> history <strong>of</strong> this period which<br />

bears upon <strong>the</strong> coinage, it is only necessary to recall to<br />

our minds <strong>the</strong> principal events.<br />
