NOTICES OF RECENT NUMISMATIC PUBLICATIONS. 355<br />

followed is <strong>the</strong> same as in <strong>the</strong> first edition, <strong>the</strong> coins <strong>of</strong> each<br />

reign being placed under <strong>the</strong> different mints arranged in alphabetical<br />

order, <strong>the</strong> different types being numbered. A list <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong><br />

names <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> moneyers <strong>and</strong> <strong>the</strong> towns at which <strong>the</strong>y exercised<br />

<strong>the</strong>ir calling is appended to <strong>the</strong> catalogue <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> coins <strong>of</strong> each<br />

reign. <strong>The</strong> Plates showing <strong>the</strong> different types are increased in<br />

number from ten to fourteen, but <strong>the</strong> map showing <strong>the</strong> localities<br />

<strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> numerous finds <strong>and</strong> <strong>the</strong> original Introduction are not<br />

repeated in this second edition, which is, moreover, a large<br />

octavo instead <strong>of</strong> a quarto. <strong>The</strong> identification <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> places <strong>of</strong><br />

mintage with <strong>the</strong>ir modern representatives has been carefully<br />

considered, but in some few cases <strong>the</strong> attribution has not been<br />

decided, so that some puzzling questions are still left for <strong>the</strong><br />

English reader. Including<br />

imitation <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> pennies <strong>of</strong><br />

those <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> Irish coins struck in<br />

^<strong>the</strong>lred II. <strong>and</strong> Cnut, to which a<br />

section is dedicated, <strong>the</strong> mint towns are upwards <strong>of</strong> a hundred<br />

in number ; but it would be beyond <strong>the</strong> province <strong>of</strong> this notice<br />

to discuss <strong>the</strong>m. It may, however, be suggested that <strong>the</strong><br />

Ricyebyrig <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> coins may quite as probably be Richborough<br />

near S<strong>and</strong>wich as Rising Castle in Norfolk, or Richborough<br />

(Risborough ?) in Buckinghamshire. Although <strong>the</strong> site <strong>of</strong> this<br />

once famous town is now a mere mass <strong>of</strong> ruins, it was still<br />

occupied in Saxon times, as is proved by coins from <strong>the</strong> reign<br />

<strong>of</strong> Offa * to that <strong>of</strong> ^E<strong>the</strong>bred II. having been found <strong>the</strong>re. It is,<br />

indeed, said to have been <strong>the</strong> port at which St. Augustiu l<strong>and</strong>ed<br />

in A.D. 597.<br />

In conclusion we cannot do better than cite a few words from<br />

Pr<strong>of</strong>. Hildebr<strong>and</strong>'s new Preface which all our readers will<br />

endorse.<br />

" This collection is <strong>of</strong> its kind <strong>the</strong> largest that exists,<br />

<strong>and</strong> <strong>the</strong>refore has special historical importance, not alone for<br />

Sweden, in whose soil <strong>the</strong>se coins were deposited, but also for<br />

<strong>the</strong> country from which <strong>the</strong>y were carried away." J. E.<br />
