BrEOTIA. PERIOD VI11. CIRC. B.C. 387 374. 227<br />

<strong>The</strong>re are no coins <strong>of</strong> Plataea which can be attributed<br />

ei<strong>the</strong>r to <strong>the</strong> time before <strong>the</strong> Persian wars or even to <strong>the</strong><br />

remaining portion <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> fifth century.<br />

After its destruc-<br />

tion by <strong>the</strong> Peloponnesians in 426 no coinage is possible<br />

until <strong>the</strong> Peace <strong>of</strong> Antalcidas, B.C. 387, when it was<br />

restored by <strong>the</strong> Lacedemonians, to be again destroyed by<br />

<strong>the</strong> <strong>The</strong>bans in B.C. 372. This is <strong>the</strong> period to which <strong>the</strong><br />

above-described silver coins appear to belong. Some <strong>of</strong><br />

<strong>the</strong> copper coins may belong to this period, o<strong>the</strong>rs are<br />

apparently subsequent to <strong>the</strong> restoration <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> town for<br />

<strong>the</strong> third time by Philip <strong>of</strong> Macedon after <strong>the</strong> battle <strong>of</strong><br />

Chaeroneia.<br />

<strong>The</strong> head <strong>of</strong> Hera on <strong>the</strong>se coins may<br />

be that <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong><br />

statue by Praxiteles in <strong>the</strong> Herzeum (Paus. ix. 2, 7). .<br />

Of <strong>the</strong> following two coins, <strong>the</strong> first seems to belong to<br />

a later period than <strong>the</strong> foregoing ; but as it st<strong>and</strong>s alone<br />

I have not thought it necessary to remove it from <strong>the</strong><br />

o<strong>the</strong>r pieces. <strong>The</strong> second coin is very probably not<br />

Plataoan at all.<br />
