<strong>The</strong> first <strong>of</strong>fensive movement undertaken by <strong>The</strong>bes<br />

against <strong>the</strong> Spartan Empire in Nor<strong>the</strong>rn Greece was <strong>the</strong><br />

expedition into <strong>The</strong>ssaly to expel <strong>the</strong> Lacedocmonian<br />

harmosts <strong>and</strong> garrisons in those regions. This object was<br />

effected by <strong>the</strong> <strong>The</strong>ban leader Ismenias.<br />

<strong>The</strong>bes now became one <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> principal states <strong>of</strong> a<br />

great anti-Spartan alliance, including among its members<br />

A<strong>the</strong>ns, Corinth, Argos, <strong>and</strong> nearly <strong>the</strong> whole <strong>of</strong> Central<br />

Greece.<br />

<strong>The</strong> events <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> next few years are in brief as<br />

follows :<br />

395. Formation <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> anti-Spartan alliance by <strong>The</strong>bes,<br />

A<strong>the</strong>ns, Corinth, <strong>and</strong> Argos.<br />

394. Spartan victory over <strong>the</strong> allies near Corinth.<br />

394. Defeat <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> Lacedemonian fleet <strong>of</strong>f Cnidus by<br />

Conon.<br />

Agesilaus, recalled from Asia, crosses <strong>the</strong> Hellespont<br />

<strong>and</strong> invades Boeotia from <strong>the</strong> north.<br />

Battle <strong>of</strong> Coroneia. Hard-won victory <strong>of</strong> Agesilaus.<br />

<strong>The</strong> result not unfavourable to <strong>the</strong> <strong>The</strong>bans.<br />

Agesilaus withdraws his forces into Pelopon-<br />

nesus.<br />

393 387. Corinthian war <strong>and</strong> o<strong>the</strong>r campaigns.<br />

391. Abortive peace negotiations. <strong>The</strong>bes <strong>of</strong>fers to recognise<br />

<strong>the</strong> autonomy <strong>of</strong> Orchomenus.
