COINAGE OF EPHESUS.<br />

ADDENDA ET CORRIGENDA.<br />

SINCE <strong>the</strong> publication <strong>of</strong> my paper on <strong>the</strong> chronological<br />

sequence <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> coins <strong>of</strong> Ephesus, in June last (Num.<br />

Chron., N.S., vol. xx. pp. 85 173j, I have been<br />

favoured, through <strong>the</strong> kindness <strong>of</strong> M. Waddington <strong>and</strong><br />

o<strong>the</strong>rs, with so much additional matter that I am now<br />

able to contribute as many as seventy-seven new names to<br />

my lists <strong>of</strong> Ephesian magistrates ; thus raising <strong>the</strong> total<br />

number <strong>of</strong> names from 238 to 315. <strong>The</strong>re are also a few<br />

erroneous readings (chiefly Mionnet's) which M. Wad-<br />

dington, who has himself examined <strong>and</strong> taken notes <strong>of</strong><br />

most <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> great public collections <strong>of</strong> Ephesian coins in<br />

Europe, has most kindly enabled me to correct. I lose no<br />

time, <strong>the</strong>refore, in laying before <strong>the</strong> readers <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> Numis-<br />

matic Chronicle <strong>the</strong>se additions <strong>and</strong> corrections.<br />

My readers will remember that <strong>the</strong> three main points<br />

which I strove to establish in that essay were :<br />

1st. <strong>The</strong> approximate chronological sequence <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong><br />

coinage <strong>of</strong> Ephesus from <strong>the</strong> earliest<br />

establishment <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> empire.<br />

2nd. That <strong>the</strong> magistrate whose name appears regularly<br />

on <strong>the</strong> coinage is an annual magistrate.<br />

3rd. That this annual magistrate was <strong>the</strong> first Prytanis<br />

who at Ephesus was <strong>the</strong> President <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> Com-
