262 NUMISMATIC CHRONICLE.<br />

after <strong>the</strong> general declaration <strong>of</strong> freedom in Hellas by<br />

Flamininus in B.C. 197, for had this been <strong>the</strong> case <strong>the</strong><br />

coins restruck would assuredly have been those <strong>of</strong> Philip<br />

<strong>and</strong> not those <strong>of</strong> Antigonus, who died in B.C. 220.<br />

All things considered, it seems, <strong>the</strong>refore, safer to attri-<br />

bute to <strong>the</strong> reign <strong>of</strong> Philip <strong>and</strong> to <strong>the</strong> period before B.C. 197<br />

<strong>the</strong> bronze coins in question, as well as <strong>the</strong> silver with <strong>the</strong><br />

same obverse type, viz. <strong>the</strong> head <strong>of</strong> Persephone facing,<br />

which cannot be separated from <strong>the</strong> bronze.<br />

<strong>The</strong>se silver coins weigh about 80 grains, <strong>and</strong> may be<br />

called drachms <strong>of</strong> a st<strong>and</strong>ard,<br />

to which for distinction's<br />

sake we may give <strong>the</strong> name <strong>of</strong> Aetolian, <strong>The</strong> origin <strong>of</strong><br />

this st<strong>and</strong>ard is doubtful (perhaps it is simply <strong>the</strong><br />

Aeginetic reduced). In <strong>the</strong> coinage <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> Aetolian<br />

League we find it combined with <strong>the</strong> Attic, <strong>the</strong> various<br />

Aetolian denominations weighing 260 grs. (Attic tetra-<br />

drachm), 160 grs., 80 grs., <strong>and</strong> 40 grs. <strong>The</strong> same coinst<strong>and</strong>ard<br />

is also prevalent during <strong>the</strong> same period in<br />

Corcyra, Epirus, Acarnania, <strong>and</strong> Euboea.<br />
