COINAGE OF EPHESUS. 15<br />

names <strong>of</strong> as many as five occur on <strong>the</strong> coins <strong>of</strong> precisely<br />

<strong>the</strong>se same periods, is quite enough to prove that <strong>the</strong><br />

eponymous Prytanis frequently signed <strong>the</strong> money. But<br />

as <strong>the</strong>re are more names on <strong>the</strong> coins in some periods than<br />

<strong>the</strong>re could possibly have been Eponymi, it likewise<br />

follows that <strong>the</strong> annual chief magistrate cannot have<br />

signed in his character <strong>of</strong> Eponymus, but simply as one<br />

<strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> board <strong>of</strong> Prytaneis, ei<strong>the</strong>r in turn with <strong>the</strong> o<strong>the</strong>rs<br />

or in conjunction with one <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong>m, or in virtue <strong>of</strong> some<br />

commission, <strong>of</strong>fice, or duty, which was <strong>of</strong>ten held by him<br />

but was not his sole prerogative.<br />

That <strong>the</strong>re were some-<br />

times in one <strong>and</strong> <strong>the</strong> same year several issues from <strong>the</strong><br />

Ephesian mint, or contemporary emissions from different<br />

<strong>of</strong>ficinse <strong>of</strong> that mint, each issue bearing a different signa-<br />

ture, is proved by an examination <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> dated cistophori.<br />

It would seem, <strong>the</strong>refore, that whenever a fresh issue was<br />

necessary, a magistrate, or perhaps two magistrates at<br />

different <strong>of</strong>ficinae, were required to place <strong>the</strong>ir names upon<br />

<strong>the</strong> dies, <strong>and</strong> that moreover one <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong>se magistrates was<br />

frequently <strong>the</strong> eponymous Prytanis <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> year.<br />

Beyond this it would be unsafe to speculate until we<br />

know more <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> constitution<br />

mous period.<br />

<strong>of</strong> Ephesus in <strong>the</strong> autono-<br />

<strong>The</strong> following are <strong>the</strong> additional coins in <strong>the</strong> various<br />
