220 NUMISMATIC CHRONICLE.<br />

years her will was law in every Boeotian town. <strong>The</strong>n<br />

came <strong>the</strong> reaction. <strong>The</strong> carefully contrived conspiracy <strong>of</strong><br />

Pelopidas <strong>and</strong> his friends was completely successful ; <strong>the</strong><br />

Cadmeia was recovered ; <strong>the</strong> Spartans expelled ; <strong>and</strong> <strong>the</strong><br />

ancient institutions, at least in <strong>The</strong>bes, were restored (B.C.<br />

379 8). <strong>The</strong> o<strong>the</strong>r Bceotian towns remained in <strong>the</strong> h<strong>and</strong>s<br />

<strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> Spartans for some years longer, until <strong>the</strong> <strong>The</strong>bans<br />

under Pelopidas gained a victory over <strong>the</strong> Lacedaemonians,<br />

B.C. 376, which enabled <strong>the</strong>m to restore <strong>the</strong> ancient con-<br />

federacy, <strong>and</strong> by <strong>the</strong> year<br />

B.C. 374 Orchomenus was <strong>the</strong><br />

only Boeotian town not included in <strong>the</strong> League. This city,<br />

<strong>the</strong> ancient rival <strong>of</strong> <strong>The</strong>bes, remained faithful to Sparta<br />

down to <strong>the</strong> battle <strong>of</strong> Leuctra, B.C. 371.<br />

This period <strong>of</strong> disintegration, B.C. 387 374, has left<br />

marked traces upon <strong>the</strong> coinage. At no o<strong>the</strong>r epoch in<br />

<strong>the</strong> history <strong>of</strong> Boeotia can we point to such a variety <strong>of</strong><br />

coin-types, <strong>the</strong> issue <strong>of</strong> so many independent mints. <strong>The</strong><br />

BoDotian shield on <strong>the</strong> obverse is, however, still retained as<br />

a matter <strong>of</strong> custom, ra<strong>the</strong>r perhaps than as <strong>the</strong> symbol <strong>of</strong><br />

actual union between <strong>the</strong> different Boeotian cities.<br />

any<br />

<strong>The</strong> following are <strong>the</strong> coins <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> non-<strong>The</strong>ban mints<br />

which, perhaps with a few exceptions, can only belong to<br />

this period. <strong>The</strong> coinage <strong>of</strong> <strong>The</strong>bes itself is less easily<br />

distinguished, <strong>and</strong> will be discussed later on.<br />
