PERIOD X. CIRC. B.C. 338315.<br />

Whe<strong>the</strong>r <strong>The</strong>bes made any fur<strong>the</strong>r resistance after <strong>the</strong><br />

battle <strong>of</strong> Chaeroneia we are not informed, but it is certain<br />

that <strong>the</strong> city fell almost immediately into <strong>the</strong> h<strong>and</strong>s <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong><br />

conqueror.<br />

<strong>The</strong> leading citizens were now ei<strong>the</strong>r put to death or<br />

driven into exile, <strong>and</strong> a council <strong>of</strong> 300 <strong>The</strong>bans, partizans<br />

<strong>of</strong> Philip, was invested with absolute power <strong>and</strong> supported<br />

by a Macedonian garrison in <strong>the</strong> Cadmeia.<br />

head <strong>of</strong> all Boeotia, her ancient enemies, Orchomenus,<br />

insults <strong>and</strong> personal injuries which her citizens were<br />

compelled to submit to at <strong>the</strong> h<strong>and</strong>s <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> barbarous<br />

Macedonian soldiery.<br />

Driven at length to despair <strong>the</strong>y rose against <strong>the</strong>ir<br />

oppressors, B.C. 335, slew Timolaus, one <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> leading<br />

partizans <strong>of</strong> Philip, proclaimed <strong>the</strong>mselves autonomous,<br />

<strong>and</strong> proceeded to <strong>the</strong> election <strong>of</strong> Boeotarchs. But <strong>the</strong><br />

Macedonian garrison in <strong>the</strong> Cadmeia was not to be so<br />
