ACCOUNT OF COINS OF HENRY III. FOUND AT<br />

NEWARK IN JTNE, 1881.<br />

8, AUTHUR STREET, NOTTINGHAM, 27th June, 1881.<br />

DEAR SIR, I have much pleasure in reporting to you<br />

a small find <strong>of</strong> coins at Newark made in this county on<br />

<strong>the</strong> 7th day <strong>of</strong> June last, upon <strong>the</strong> premises<br />

<strong>of</strong> Messrs.<br />

Caparn, Hankey & Co., <strong>the</strong> eminent brewers. Through<br />

<strong>the</strong> kindness <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong>se gentlemen I have been enabled to<br />

examine a dozen <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> pieces, particulars <strong>of</strong> which are<br />

annexed. <strong>The</strong> jar or urn under which <strong>the</strong>y were found<br />

(for it was upside down) is quite perfect, as will be seen in<br />

woodcut above. It is <strong>of</strong> light red, somewhat gritty ware,<br />

turned on a wheel. On <strong>the</strong> outside are one or two acci-<br />

dental patches <strong>of</strong> a bottle-green glaze. <strong>The</strong> coins were as<br />

usual very much oxidized <strong>and</strong> corroded, but have cleaned<br />

very well, <strong>and</strong> are, with perhaps one exception, <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong><br />

London <strong>and</strong> Canterbury mints, long-cross pennies struck<br />

in <strong>the</strong> reign <strong>of</strong> Henry III. <strong>The</strong>y are <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> same class<br />

<strong>and</strong> types as <strong>the</strong> hoard <strong>of</strong> coins found on Tower Hill <strong>and</strong><br />

reported upon by you to <strong>the</strong> <strong>Numismatic</strong> <strong>Society</strong> in 1869.
