<strong>The</strong> condition <strong>of</strong> Boaotia after <strong>the</strong> signing <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> Peace<br />

<strong>of</strong> Antalcidas was greatly changed. Though all <strong>the</strong> cities<br />

<strong>of</strong> that l<strong>and</strong>, with <strong>the</strong> exception <strong>of</strong> Orchomenus <strong>and</strong><br />

<strong>The</strong>spise, appear to have been sincerely attached to <strong>the</strong><br />

time-honoured form <strong>of</strong> government, <strong>of</strong> which <strong>the</strong>ir elected<br />

representatives <strong>the</strong> Boaotarchs, formed <strong>the</strong> executive ;<br />

<strong>and</strong><br />

although <strong>the</strong>y were on <strong>the</strong> whole content with <strong>the</strong> federal<br />

head-ship <strong>of</strong> <strong>The</strong>bes, never<strong>the</strong>less <strong>the</strong>re was in each <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong>m<br />

a Separatist minority favourable to <strong>the</strong> independent auto-<br />

nomy <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> individual communities, <strong>and</strong> this party was<br />

now won over to <strong>the</strong> Spartan alliance.<br />

Oligarchies under Spartan patronage, <strong>and</strong> upheld by <strong>the</strong><br />

presence in most <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> towns <strong>of</strong> a Spartan harmost <strong>and</strong><br />

garrison, were now set up throughout Boaotia, while at <strong>the</strong><br />

same time Plataea was rebuilt as a dependency <strong>of</strong> Sparta,<br />

nominally, like <strong>the</strong> rest, autonomous.<br />

From <strong>the</strong> time <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> signing <strong>of</strong> this peace <strong>the</strong>re were<br />

no longer any general assemblies <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> BoBotians, or any<br />

elections <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> Bo3otarchs. <strong>The</strong> ancient confederacy was<br />

broken up into its constituent parts.<br />

At <strong>The</strong>bes itself <strong>the</strong>re was a Spartan faction headed by<br />

Leontiades, one <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> Polemarchs. This was <strong>the</strong> man<br />

who betrayed <strong>the</strong> <strong>The</strong>ban citadel into <strong>the</strong> h<strong>and</strong>s <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong><br />

Spartans under Phoebidas in B.C. 382, <strong>and</strong> drove into exile<br />

his fellow Polemarch, Ismenius, toge<strong>the</strong>r with Pelopidas<br />

<strong>and</strong> many o<strong>the</strong>rs. Sparta was now supreme, <strong>and</strong> for three
