show <strong>the</strong> substitution <strong>of</strong> A for <strong>the</strong> older D, <strong>and</strong> P for R,<br />

<strong>and</strong> with those <strong>of</strong> Haliartus with ARIARTIO^, &c.<br />

Mythologically also <strong>the</strong> coins <strong>of</strong> <strong>The</strong>spiae are <strong>of</strong> value,<br />

as <strong>the</strong>y prove that in addition to Eros, who was <strong>the</strong> god<br />

especially revered at that city, Aphrodite Melainis<br />

(Pausanias, ix. 27) was <strong>the</strong>re worshipped as a moon goddess.<br />

<strong>The</strong> crescent-moon is more constant as a mint-mark on <strong>the</strong><br />

coins <strong>of</strong> <strong>The</strong>spiae than <strong>the</strong> club on those <strong>of</strong> <strong>The</strong>bes, <strong>the</strong><br />

ear <strong>of</strong> corn on those <strong>of</strong> Orchomenus, or <strong>the</strong> trident on<br />

those <strong>of</strong> Haliartus.<br />
